Advertising on the Sly
Advertising is a booming business as products and companies, logos and brands all jockey for the best position in front of an often cash strapped consumer base. With fewer people spending money, businesses are going above and beyond the normal routes to ensure that their products or services are out there for all to see, and hopefully, to be tempted by.
The key to gaining momentum in the market and with potential consumers, without breaking the bank, is creativity. Many companies and agencies are taking advantage of different tactics, and putting their own spin on them. Whether it be blind advertising, bandit signs, guerrilla marketing – one thing is for sure – it works! Product placement is subtle, not a flashy commercial with the pumping sound track that tells you to go out and buy a particular type of jeans or cologne. It's the brand name cola can innocently pointing right at the camera, the logo slashed across the front of someone's t-shirt or the mural on the side of the building. Wild posting – plastering the side of a building, or an entire fence with the same poster over and over – was once common place, and is making a comeback in some urban settings; as well as the use of door hanger plastic bags.
Advertising can be "quiet" and yet still be very effective, provided you know your market. A perfect example of this is a music industry campaign several years ago in the UK. An artist already popular in the US trying to break into the already flooded European market was successful because the band was very clever about it. They plastered London with plain black and white posters that said simply "Who is Dave Matthews?" with a web address at the bottom. Steven Singer Jewelers had a similar campaign on the East Coast of the United States. People are curious and don't like being left out of the next big thing, playing of consumers' curiosity tends to lead to a fun and talked about campaign.
Advertising doesn't always have to mean a glossy magazine cover because the most important factor is where are your customers looking for you? That's where you should be.
