SPACE PENS - SCIENCE FICTION
The story of the American and Russian space engineers in the space race of the 1960s is well-known.They were tasked with designing a writing instrument that could work in the gravity-free environment. The NASA engineers spent millions on developing a special 'astronaut' pen whilst the Soviets spent nothing, and used a pencil to achieve the same result.
Being economical with the truth does get in the way of a good story? While the story is pure fiction, the fact is that writing instruments are indispensable in daily life - even in space.
The truth, accordnig to legend busting website Snopes.com, both the Soviets and the Americans used pencils in space, but the leads that broke off floated around in the zero-gravity environment and were a safety hazard.
Paul Fisher, who founded the Fisher pen company was an engineer and he realised that the space programme could do with something far safer and which was able to work under extreme temperature variations. After two years and over a million dollars in development, he developed the first successful pressurised ball pen that was made completely out of metal. In 1965, Fisher sent some samples to the space centre in Houston where NASA subjected them to some thorough testing.
And ever since then, Fisher's Space Pens have been included on all Russian and American manned space flights. And contrary to the rumour, no development costs were ever charged to the government – Paul Fisher paid for it all. What he did do however, was sell 400 Fisher Space Pens to NASA for $2.95 each !
From astronauts to ordinary men and women, we all need pens.Even with telecommunications advancing so rapidly, we still use pens every day for a whole host of things, from signing credit card slips and filling in forms to scribbling down notes or addressing an envelope. And anyone in the service industry who needs a pen for their job will undoubtedly complain that their pens always go missing!Whether it's a bank teller, a doctor's receptionist, a courier or a teacher - they're all victims of disappearing pens. There's no getting away from it - pens are functional and desirable.
And that's why millions of organisations use promotional pens to market their products and services. Promotional pens are available in many interesting styles and colours, suitable for any budget, and include rollerballs and ballpoints, stick, click and twist pens, markers and highlighters, multifunction, novelty and stylus pens for the digitally inclined.
These can be imprinted with an organisation's logo or strapline etc. Depending on budget, branded packaging can also be arranged which gives promotional pens added appeal.
Pens have come a long way since hollow reeds containing pigment were first used by the ancient Egyptians 3 000 years ago.Surely it wouldn't have been possible for a scribe, faithfully marking pages with hieroglyphics, to have envisioned future generations to travel heavenwards ?And that what was then a crude, basic writing tool would eventually be developed into one of our most frequently used daily items ?
Pens could well be on the list of 'ten most important things to take to a desert island' which is why promotional pens are such a popular item for branding and marketing purposes.
Does anybody know the short story about a metal ball that chases a guy around?
There is a short story about a man getting chased around by a metal ball that is set to collect bodies between certain body weights and when the man is caught he is released by the sperical object because he has lost so much weight from running that he is no longer in the weight class that the metal ball wants. What is this short story and who wrote it?
Post this question at www.whatsthatbook.com. I hope someone there will remember this story.
