Lexus Plans 1-Series Fighter, New Hybrids

Edmunds Inside Line reports, “Lexus plans to roll out its LF-A supercar by 2011 and will slot an entry-level model below the IS sedan to compete with the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3. In addition, Lexus will offer a hybrid in each of its models, including a new hybrid-only vehicle that will be to Lexus what the iconic Prius is to parent Toyota.” The plans were announced by Lexus Australia chief executive John Roca in an interview with The Australian newspaper.
Autoblog comments that Lexus hopes “to attack luxury stalwarts Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz by offering a number of high-performance variants and also developing a new model that would slot in below the IS sedan to take on the BMW 1-series and the Audi A3.”
South Africa’s Car Today reports that those performance variants “will also expand the F range (currently the IS-F is the only F car in the Lexus range) with performance versions of the luxury GS and possibly the LS…probably with the planned outcome of creating models on par with the performance associated with BMW’s M division and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG.”
Motor Trend notes, “Lexus plans to sell 1 million vehicles around the world” within “the next few years.” One vehicle that will help them reach such a goal is a “coming Lexus hybrid with no non-hybrid counterpart, like the Prius. The concept is expected to debut at the next Detroit Auto Show. Perhaps before the Lexus Prius hits the streets, though, a hybrid option will be available on all Lexus models.”
