Crash and burn: “Speed Racer” flops at box office

To no one’s surprise, a mere two weeks into the “summer” movie schedule, “Speed Racer” is the season’s first financial failure.

The Wachowski Bros.’ chaotically garbled adaptation of the old TV show fell short of the $25 million opening weekend that industry insiders projected — and it’s predicted to come in fourth place this weekend, to be rapidly buried by “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.”

While the “Speed Racer” budget hasn’t been publicized, I’d guesstimate it’s somewhere north of $100 million — and it’ll be lucky to reach that mark in ticket sales before it bows from theaters.

The Wachowski bros certainly put a lot of effort into making Speed Racer… but the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard
