Chevrolet will unveiling the production version of the new Camaro sometime later this summer, but high gas prices appear to have killed plans for at least one of the anticipated models. The Camaro lineup was to have been topped off by a Z/28 model powered by a 500+ hp supercharged V8. With the national average price of gasoline at $4.16 last week, the prospects for an LS8 powered super-Camaro looked bad. Instead the Camaro will be topped off with a 400 hp SS model. Even that one may end up having a limited lifespan if gas prices keep climbing. GM has acknowledged that it is examining alternatives like smaller engines with direct injection and turbocharging. A hybrid version will likely turn up at some point as well.

Autobot Bumblebee wasn’t quite himself at the end of Transformers — as in, there were quite a few chunks of him missing. For Transformers 2: Rise of the Fallen, the producers gave Bumblebee a solid buffing out, and he’s returned with a new front spoiler and some stripes. The hood scoop and spoiler — especially seen from the side — give the already bulldog-ish Camaro a nice goose on the badass scale. If this is the treatment that the Z28 will get, we’re all for it. Very interesting news about the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro coming out of the oft first-to-know Camaro5 forums. Seems a handful of their number were offered the chance to tour the Mesa Arizona hot weather testing grounds and managed to see a couple of Camaros up close and personal. When asking engineers some questions, interesting things can come up, such as the possibility of a supercharger option, an independent rear suspension unlike the GTO setup, an inferred weight between 3,300 lbs and 4,000 lbs. and what’s this — flappy paddle shifters? Very interesting.

These shots, again from the always-willing-to-market-themselves folks at Camaro5, appear to be of the new Chevy Camaro we saw teased in that GM accessory video yesterday afternoon — body kit, ground effects and all. While we’re still not sure of the veracity of these shots — especially the photo of the Camaro from behind with the chrome on the wheels all a-gleamin’ — they look somewhat credible. Now as to whether or not they look good? That’s up to you, the commentariat. So — what say you? Is it real or is it Adobe-rex?

A four-banger in a Camaro! Blasphemy you say? Could be, but what four-pot are we talking about? In this case, the General’s car czar Bob Lutz suggests that the new 2010 Camaro due next February could offer the same 2.0 liter direct-injected engine used in the Saturn Sky Redline, Pontiac Solstice GXP and the SS versions of the Chevy HHR and Cobalt. Before dismissing the turbo-four immediately, consider the top-of-the-line engine options the Camaro offered after the last oil-embargo-driven doomsday. In ‘72, the big block 402 engine offered just 240 horsepower; in ‘73, the Z28 was equipped with a 245-horse 350 and by ‘75 the hottest option underhood made only 155 horses. Ouch. The 2.0 being considered for the Camaro punches out 260 horsepower, and based on our time with the engine, you feel each of them as you run up towards the redline. The next step-up will likely be a version of GM’s 3.6, as offered in the CTS and G8, also making around 260 horsepower.
Other Camaro tidbits mentioned by Lutz: it will be priced higher than the Mustang, as GM sees the Camaro as a higher-end offering. Specifically, Lutz suggests that the Camaro will feature a much better interior than the ‘Stang, along with its inherently better independent rear-suspension arrangement.
Perhaps a bigger question to ponder is how bad will the performance industry be impacted by new fuel efficiency standards along with the ever-tightening emissions regulations. Just so long as carmakers such as GM continue to offer engine options like their 2.0 liter DI four-banger, the performance drop-off won’t be nearly as drastic as it was back in the mid-70s
