While the Chevy Camaro is technically the Official Vehicle of SEMA, the Dodge Challenger may upstage it with a parking lot full of custom iterations including a 560-hp convertible, speedster, 900-hp Super Challenger, official Targa and Blacktop concepts and, perhaps the most exciting, a Viper-powered variant.
The latest and perhaps last custom Challenger we’ll be showing you before SEMA starts on Tuesday is from Classic Design Concepts. Called the Group 2 Widebody Challenger, its claim to fame are extra wide fenders from and rear to accommodate 20×10-inch front and 20×11.5-inch three piece wheels wearing 275 and 315 series Pirelli tires. The Group 2 kit also includes a stainless mesh grille and aluminum hood with CDC’s cold air “shaker” system. Continued

n the beginning we wanted to write about the new Chilean market Chevrolet Vectra but for no particular reason we decided to spend some time looking into GM’s global crate of nameplates. Now, pay attention because you may get lost in translation: in Europe, GM’s execs scraped the Vectra name as it was considered synonymous with “boring” in favor for the more snazzy “Insignia”. In Chili, the current Chevy Vectra which is the same car as the outgoing European Opel / Vauxhall Vectra will be physically replaced by the Insignia but for some reason, the new mid-size sedan will retain the same name as before. In a move that would have seemed implausable a decade ago, General Motors have cancelled a $2 billion investment program to update their range of full-size SUVs, the staple breadwinners of the 90s. Pulling the plug on Project CXX, which was set to underpin future versions of the Escalade, Yukon and Suburban, was unanimously approved by executives, ending 15 years of vehicles that defined the brand.
“It would have been very difficult in today’s environment to spend a couple of billion dollars to do a replacement,” said Robert A. Lutz, G.M.’s vice chairman and head of product development. In a market faced with soaring fuel prices and consumer demand for more compact, more efficient cars; “reality had set in.” Continued

In recent weeks, GM has sent us several teaser videos of a Camaro specially prepared by their Performance Parts team for SEMA next month. We lovingly decided to pass on them because they showed nothing that interested us. But now, they finally released something that we can sink our teeth into.
Although no information has been released yet, we can see in these sketches of the Camaro “Black”, some distinguishing body modifications such as front bumper lower splitter, glowing red angel eye headlamps, side skirts, monolithic 5-spoke rims and rear bumper fascia with diffuser and rectangular exhaust tips.
Other mechanical and body bits being upgrade, as seen in the videos include exhaust headers, Hurst shifter, big brake upgrade, suspension, fuel injectors, full paint job with custom vinyl graphics and something with the interior. Stay tuned. Continued

GM Executive Bob Lutz has made it absolutely clear, a new Pontiac Firebird/Trans Am resurrected along with the forthcoming Camaro is not on the way. Which hasn’t stopped people from speculating, conceptualizing and just generally HOPING, that it may still happen. At the same time, even before it has arrived, there are many others forecasting a short life for the New Camaro. Unfortunately, the latter is probably correct. Continued
