The BMX X6 is a tricky vehicle to classify. In photos, it can look like a hot-hatch on steroids. Up close, you see the SUV in the vehicle. It’s dimensions are even larger than the X5 and the only thing that cramps its cargo room to make it less than the X5 is the sloping hatch - a styling cue that makes the X6 unique and hard to pin down. Who would have imagined that the BMW X6 crossover-coupe-hatchback mismatch would look so good in a pure evil matte-black paint finish. Personally, we’d have maintained the silver color alloy wheels but other than that, this BMW X6 that looks like it was spotted in a parking lot somewhere in Austria -judging by the license plates that is- gets our full approval. AC Schnitzer is the latest tuning firm to present a styling and performance package for BMW’s self-proclaimed Sports Activity Coupe or as we prefer to call it, the new X6 crossover. The German tuner’s bodykit consists of a new front bumper fascia with larger air vents, side skirts and a rear bumper fascia that incorporates a diffuser and a new set of chromed tailpipes. In contrast to the standard X6, AC Schnitzer’s components are painted in the body-colour. Complementing the body kit is a new set of 22-inch multispoke alloy wheels finished in black.
Inside AC Schnitzer offers an array of options including the “EVO” 3-spoke Sport Airbag steering wheel, carbon fiber or aluminium trim, velour mats and aluminium sport pedals.
The BMW tuner has also developed a sport suspension kit and a new Motor Control Unit for the diesel-powered versions 3.0dX and 3.5dX details of which will be released at a later date.

BMW is marketing the X6 as an entirely new class of vehicle. As such, it’s trying to catch people’s attention in a revolutionary way. Utilizing hologram technology developed by the Dutch advertising firm, viZoo, a ten-foot long light-controlled area, the system will display a three-dimensional, interactive image of the X6 at four different locations in New York between April 21st and May 16th. The system is manipulated through a touch-screen mounted outside the display and allows participants to view the X6 from a variety of angles, check out the interior and get a run-down on the vehicle’s stats. Unfortunately, BMW hasn’t released any images or video of the X6 hologram in action, but you can read up on all the details in the press release posted below the fold.

BMW calls the X6 a Sports Activity Coupe. That seems preposterous given both their constant assertion that their best selling SUVs, the X3 and X5, be referred to as SAVs and the X6’s four doors, which is 2 more than the unofficial definition of a coupe allows. The BMW X6 is based on that X5, its main difference, aside from the obvious low roof, swoopy bodywork and huge ass, is firm suspension and the addition of Dynamic Performance Control.
It’s the latter that makes the X6 so special. Basically the cleverest rear differential in the world, DPC apportions power to the rear wheels independently to improve agility, stability and traction at all times. This matters to you and me because it makes the X6 handle incredibly well and incredibly safely in any condition without cutting power or hitting the brakes to interfere.
Combine DPC with Adaptive Drive, which eliminates roll and dive, and two incredibly powerful engines and you have a car that performs better than even the wildest imagination allows.
