Ford Revs Up New Performance Web Site

Ford has launched the Ford Performance Web site, which it says is designed to forge greater ties with the enthusiast community — and to promote such hot properties as the next-generation Mustang.

“We recognize the important role that Ford loyalists play in raising consumer awareness of Ford Motor Company,” said Jamie Allison, Ford Racing Performance Group manager. “Performance enthusiasts tend to be the most passionate, active and influential customers of all.”

The new Web site has such features as “deep-dive” information about the Ford performance vehicle lineup and a hot line (800-FORD-788) that answers questions about such vehicles. It also provides links to club sites as well as “live, expert technical assistance on the use of Ford performance hardware.”

Buick Invicta concept

First Look: Buick Invicta concept

After a long striptease, General Motors has finally unveiled the first renderings and details surrounding its Buick Invicta concept — a vision of Buick’s future and another in-the-sheetmetal manifestation of the growing international synergy between GM’s Buick teams in Shanghai, China, and Warren, Michigan.

Invicta — the star of GM’s stand at the 2008 AutoChina show in Beijing — is also widely believed to be what the 2010 Buick LaCrosse that’s been spied testing will become when it makes its appearance on Buick showroom floors in both China and the U.S. The LaCrosse is a nameplate sold both here and in China, but the cars are substantially different. That will change with the next LaCrosse, which will be underpinned by GM’s global Epsilon II architecture. The Epsilon II is front-drive based but all-wheel drive capable. Powering the Invicta concept is a version of GM’s 2.0-liter, direct-injection turbo four cylinder with an estimated 250 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Buick rummaged through the badge bin to find Invicta (Latin for invincible) — last affixed to a Buick in the late 1950s. But there’s nothing old school about how the Invicta’s design language was developed. According to GM’s global design head Ed Welburn, the Buick design teams in both the U.S. and China put their brain power together, using the company’s virtual design design centers to help meld the best ideas from both teams. Much the same was done with the Riviera concept that debuted at last year’s Shanghai show.

Invicta carries multiple design cues from previous Buick concept efforts, including the Riveria and the Velite that’s been kicking around the auto show circuit since 2004. Buick’s waterfall grille grins brightly out front with the badge prominently affixed in the center, flanked by cat-eye headlights. The signature port holes have moved from the fenders to the top of a hood that’s been sharply-creased at the edges.

From the side, the designers have gone with a coupe-like greenhouse that’s become all the rage in automotive design. They also went to the Buick history books as inspiration for the car’s ’sweepspear’ cue that runs from the headlights across the beltline, makes a Charger-esque sweep over the rear wheels and ends at the tail lights. The Invicta’s overall stance is wide and low, with short front and rear overhangs and wheels pushed out to the corners. Invicta wouldn’t be a concept without 20-inch, look-at-me rims and low profile rubber, and it doesn’t disappoint in that area.

Inside the cabin, the GM press-speak boasts of large car size in a midsize package, especially for rear passengers. A glass roof helps to open up the greenhouse, and premium touches in the cabin include seam stitching on the instrument soft-touch feel panel pad, steering wheel and door panels. Buttons, switches and pulls are also designed to upscale tactile standards, and LED accent lighting adds to the experience. Looking at the renderings, the center stack and console appear well-organized and executed.

While it’s far too early to tell what exactly how much of Invicta’s look will carry over to the new LaCrosse when it hits U.S. showrooms, probably late in 2009. But at least so far, it seems like the type of car that could help Buick build on the momentum generated from its well-received Enclave crossover.

Audi has led all the exhibitors to hold a media conference, bringing its high-end sports car A5, which is now available in car showrooms. It also made the first public introduction for its strategic model, the compact crossover Q5.

US car maker Ford has got the largest booth at the exhibition. The company’s famous brands, such as Ford, Mazda and Volvo, have all gathered here. It made the global debut for its Ford Carnival, which will start selling later this year in Europe and China simultaneously.

Zou Wenchao, VP of Changan Ford Mazda, said, “This model was designed with a dynamic concept. We have taken the domestic market into consideration. It will be a good choice for young people.”

The company also showed its latest achievements on energy saving, handling and safety.

Home grown brands are not lagging behind. Chery has brought 26 models here, 12 of which are making their debut. Meanwhile, Brilliance Auto has designed its booth in a unique traditional Chinese style.

Yang Bo, VP of Brilliance Jinbei Auto, said, “We are home grown brands. Our design is telling the public that we want to enter the international market.”

More than 220 overseas companies and 18 hundred domestic companies have attended the auto show, while over 8,000 journalists are covering the event. For both car makers and media reporters, this year’s auto show is not only a platform for performance, but also an arena for competition.

Automakers step up in China as West wobbles

Automobile industry executives at Beijing’s bi-annual auto show forecast another boom year in China in 2008, with sales in the world’s No. 2 car market rising and production ramping up to take advantage of lower costs.Global automakers such as Volkswagen AG (VOWG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research), General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research) are increasingly relying on emerging markets such as China to take up the slack as U.S. and European consumers feel the pinch from slowing economies and rising prices.

“I say this internally all the time, but the company that gets China right is going to be the dominant player for the next 25 years,” GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said at the Beijing Auto Show.

GM’s China sales lagged in the first quarter due to winter storms that disrupted shipments, but the company ranked No. 2 by production in China last year is forecasting a recovery.

“We still expect a very good year and to grow in line with the market,” GM’s president and managing director Kevin Wale said.

GM expects total China car sales to rise about 16 percent in 2008, after climbing to 6.3 million in 2007. Most executives predicated the whole auto market, including trucks and buses, to reach 10 million units this year.

As big as the Chinese car market has become, just 44 out of every 1,000 people owns a vehicle, compared with an average 600 for the developed world and some 800 for the United States.

The number of vehicles on Chinese roads last year reached 47 million, parts maker Magna International said, a level equivalent to where the United States was in 1947.

Pixar confirms Cars 2 for 2012

pixar,celebrities.iphone,cars

The animators at Pixar have set their schedules through 2012, and while the slate includes new films like Up and Newt, it’s also brimming with sequels. Following the third installment of the studio’s Toy Story franchise in 2010, Pixar will release the sequel to our favorite animated homage to automobiles, Cars 2. While we don’t know for sure if Lightning McQueen and Sally Carrera will return, the press release indicates that the film will be filled with old and new characters for kids and kid-like adults to enjoy. Like most of Pixar’s upcoming schedule, Cars 2 will also be presented in 3D, and let me tell you, after watching Beowulf skewer Grendel in the third dimension, we can’t wait for an animated fender to fly out of the screen at us. The date is set for 2012, so there’s a long way to go, and this installment will be directed by Brad Lewis, who produced Ratatouille, rather than the first film’s director, John Lasseter. Lasseter proved himself to be a man steeped in car culture, so Lewis has some mighty big brake shoes to fill.

Cuts for Chrysler

chrysler cars job cuts factory shutdown

Chrysler is trying to cut its way back to significance. It’s going to hurt.

The automaker’s 71,000 employees will be on “mandatory vacation” for two weeks in July when all operations across the country are shut down, the company said Thursday.

A forced break is drastic, though for Chrysler perhaps not surprising considering its financial straits.

After losing $1.6 billion last year, it announced plans to shutter offices, reduce its workforce, eliminate dealerships and do away with redundant models. But with one of the least fuel-efficient fleets on the road, inventory piling up on dealer lots and the popularity of its top seller — the Dodge Ram pickup — slumping along with the housing market, there’s reason to suspect that cutting alone won’t be the solution.

Unless Chrysler figures out how to increase sales and build cars and trucks that people want, the 83-year-old company’s prospects will be dim.

“Chrysler is in a tailspin,” said Dennis Virag, president of the Automotive Consulting Group in Ann Arbor, Mich., repeating oft-heard speculation that the carmaker may be forced to sell off valuable assets. “In two or three years, there may not be a stand-alone Chrysler company anymore.”

The comedown has been dramatic for Chrysler, which is No. 4 in U.S. sales volume behind General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and Ford Motor Co. (Toyota has plans to cut back too, saying Thursday that it would trim production of full-size Tundra pickup trucks as U.S. vehicle sales slow.)

After nine years under the direction of German automaker Daimler, Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler was acquired in August by Cerberus Capital Management in a highly leveraged, $7.5-billion deal. Hopes were raised that a private equity firm, thanks to its relative agility compared with publicly held companies, would be able to rapidly turn Chrysler’s fortunes around.

To do that, Cerberus hired Robert Nardelli, former head of Home Depot Inc., as chief executive and brought on Toyota’s top man in the U.S., Jim Press, as vice chairman and president, a brain trust that had the industry buzzing.

But slumping credit markets, combined with Chrysler’s continuing problems of overproduction, excess inventory and a dealer network far too large for its market share, turned the renewal efforts into what Nardelli called “recovery” in Thursday’s memo to employees.

“We ask that you approach this idea with an open mind and a team spirit,” the memo said. “It’s going to take your cooperation and teamwork to achieve success.”

Last month at the annual trade show for dealers, Press announced plans to reduce the number of dealers by combining the company’s Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands on single lots, encouraging larger dealers to buy out smaller ones in the process.

Press also said the company would eliminate redundancies in vehicle lineups, singling out two minivans, the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country, that essentially compete with each other.

The news was generally well-received by dealers, who have faced slipping profitability as Chrysler vehicles pile up on their lots despite aggressive attempts to move them.

This month Chrysler increased incentives by 5%, to an average of $3,579 per vehicle, and it is offering as many as seven years with no interest on financing some models. In February Chrysler sales declined by 14% compared with the previous year, and in January they fell by 12.1%, according to Autodata Corp.

“There’s no secret. They’re struggling,” said Tom Libby, an analyst with J.D. Power & Associates. “They need to improve their performance in traditionally important categories.”

Chrysler’s fleet of about 30 vehicles is long on trucks and sport utility vehicles, but lacks many of the vehicles that have been seeing sales gains of late, including highly efficient smaller cars. Rivals Ford, GM, Toyota and Honda Motor Co. have been selling hybrid vehicles in the U.S. for years; Chrysler will introduce its first hybrids, the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen, which sport 5.7-liter V8 engines, this fall.

With gasoline averaging $3.23 a gallon nationwide as of this week, and stricter federal emissions standards now on the books, observers said there was considerable financial peril at hand for Chrysler unless it made more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Equally troubling is the lack of a blockbuster product to draw buyers to lots. Several years ago Chrysler had a certifiable hit in its 300 sedan, but it has not been able to repeat that success even as competitors such as GM rolled out winners including the Chevrolet Malibu.

In the crucial family sedan class, the company still offers the 300 — now a “bit long in the tooth,” according to analyst Virag — the Sebring, which has been repeatedly panned by critics, and the Avenger, which Chrysler plans to scrap.

And while Ford and GM increasingly turn to robust international sales to make up for weaknesses in the domestic market, Chrysler has almost no foreign exposure. Last year, it sold about 200,000 cars overseas, compared with nearly 2.1 million in the U.S.

Faced with such challenges, Chrysler has moved to reduce its workforce by offering buyouts and early retirement packages aimed to eliminate 10,000 factory jobs. It has also taken steps recently to lay off upward of 1,000 salaried workers, including engineers.

Increasingly, rumors have been swirling about whether Chrysler will be forced to sell off valuable assets if its fortunes don’t turn around. A leading candidate would be Jeep, which is widely considered to have the most value among Chrysler brands.

Last month at the auto dealers convention, Press reacted forcefully to questions about the company’s viability, calling suggestions that Chrysler couldn’t survive “hogwash.”

Critics have little trouble finding evidence that might suggest otherwise. Last week Chrysler said it would shutter its influential Pacifica Design Studio in Carlsbad, although almost all other automakers maintain studios in Southern California.

“At the end of the day, if you’re not out here and your competitors are, it could hurt you,” said John Grafman, executive director of the Auto Design Organization. “Is it short-term thinking? Quite possibly.”

Barnes Broke Thumb In Crash In NASCAR Three During Daytona 200

broken thumb at daytona 200 moto racing

Michael Barnes was running seventh in the 67th Daytona 200, March 8 at Daytona International Speedway, when on lap 11 he clipped the last section of soft barriers at the exit of the chicane and suffered a violent tumble down the banking in NASCAR Turn Three.

“I just remember it flashing right out in front of me,” Barnes told Roadracingworld.com, referring to the non-inflatable safety module.

On-track activities were postponed on the day of the Daytona 200 due to winds, some gusting as high as 50 mph, according to race officials, moving soft barriers out of position.

“I just remember Nicky Moore being in front of me, which is why I went high,” continued Barnes. “I don’t know if I was trying to squeeze into a spot that was too tight, but I don’t disregard the wind pushing it into me. But it was the biggest surprise ever!

“I believe it hit the right front of the bike. I think it must have tapped the brakes, because I was off immediately. Then I did nothing but tumble down the track. I tumbled down the track, then down the banking. But my safety gear really did its job.”

SPEED Channel showed a replay of Barnes, strapped to a gurney, being loaded into an ambulance, but only reported that he was transported to Halifax Medical Center with no further update on his condition.

“I’m really disappointed that nothing was updated on SPEED,” said Barnes. “It would have been really easy for them. I was assessed with a broken left thumb before the end of the race.”

Barnes said he had surgery to pin his thumb fracture at Halifax Medical Center and was released later that night.

“It was a simple fracture and a simple surgery,” said Barnes. “I even went and made a brief appearance at the Ocean Deck that night to let people know I was OK.”

Barnes said the pin will stay in his thumb for four weeks, “and we’ll access things then.”

Barnes raced his 2007-spec Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600 Formula Xtreme bike in the Daytona 200, a one-race deal, and a Celtic Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 (another race-by-race deal) to a competitive sixth (0.047 second behind fourth) in Superstock in hopes of showing potential employers that he is competitive and healthy after suffering a season-ending wrist injury in May 2007.

“I hope I showed that,” said Barnes. “I felt good all weekend. I’m pretty proud of myself and the times I turned. Unfortunately, this [crash] is one of those freak deals. Hopefully, I’m done with my share of freak deals for a while. I just want to say thanks to all my friends, family and fans for supporting me.”
