Fisker previews production Karma plug-in hybrid ahead of Detroit

Fisker Karma, hybrid, Detroit Auto Show

California’s Fisker Automotive has confirmed today that its upcoming Karma plug-in hybrid will be shown for the first time in full production trim at next month’s Detroit Auto Show. With only minor design enhancements made to the exterior of the original concept, the production Karma, seen here for the first time, retains the extreme proportions and sculptured look of the show car.

“We are very excited to be bringing the Fisker Karma back to NAIAS,” said Fisker Automotive CEO Henrik Fisker. “In the year since we debuted the Karma, the reception we’ve received has been tremendous. I’m proud to announce at this time that we are already sold out on the car until mid-2010.” With a base price of $87,900, the environmentally friendly luxury saloon is scheduled to begin delivery in November next year.

Cobo inaction risks loss of Detroit auto show

The alarms were sounding this week all around Mackinac Island during the Detroit Chamber of Commerce Leadership Conference.

We heard alarms about future energy needs while ignoring the exorbitant costs to consumers of the alternative fuel ideas being promoted and the plentiful energy supply that exists.

We heard alarms about the state’s health care costs and proposed future changes even while we enjoy the best medical care system on earth.

But the most serious alarm, which requires urgent attention, was sounded over the continuing inaction of state and local officials, a dereliction of duty that has led Detroit to the precipice of losing one of its most important events — the North American International Auto Show.

Executives of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association — who have built the auto show into a critical economic component of Metro Detroit — have, for the first time, begun discussing the possibility of abandoning their home base as the site of their highly desirable show.

For more than five years, officials have debated one plan or another, at proposed costs ranging from $90 million to $900 million, for a needed expansion of ancient Cobo Center, home of the auto show. The discussion has revealed a rare unanimity in Michigan, with widespread agreement over the expansion’s necessity, but widespread disagreement over the exact plan and financing of the project.

Meantime, the vultures have been circling.

As Detroit and Michigan have dawdled, other auto shows have been angling for advantage over the esteemed Detroit show and nibbling meat from its bones.

At the recent Beijing Auto Show this year, officials of the competing Chicago Auto Show “followed us around in meetings with manufacturers,” says Doug Fox, the senior co-chairman of the 2009 NAIAS.

“They (Chicago officials) told the Chineses manufacturers that we were putting them in the basement at Cobo while they were positioning them next to General Motors and the other major brands on the same floor,” Fox bemoaned.

And the competition to Detroit is gaining ground.

Detroit has seen the defection of manufacturers like Porsche from its show. It has seen the number of new car launches and major press announcements decline in recent years.

The Detroit auto dealer leadership is now openly discussing alternatives.

“The show is a commodity that can be traded,” Fox says.

Fox and his junior co-chair, Joe Serra, have introduced two bombshell possibilities in the absence of quick movement on a definitive Cobo plan by this fall.

Under the first plan, the Detroit auto dealers would take the NAIAS banner and, on a rotating basis, place it over the auto shows in other cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York — which has already begun to bill its show as international.

Under the more severe, plan, the dealers would permanently sell its International Auto Show franchise to one of its competitors and reduce the Detroit show to a much smaller, regional event.

Serra, who says the Detroit area dealers’ goal remains “to stay in Detroit,” nevertheless warns that time for action is quickly expiring. His group’s understandable frustration is reaching a breaking point.

The dealers have watched while Michigan and Metro Detroit officials have bent over backwards, finding comity and resources to land occasional major sporting events like the Super Bowl, the Detroit Grand Prix and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

But these same politicos have been incapable of satisfying the needs of the area’s biggest regular draw in the NAIAS, which accounts for $600 million in annual economic activity, not to mention 16,000 jobs and $6 million in charitable contributions.

One would think that a state that quickly adopted a plan to hand out $140 million in cash incentives to the Hollywood movie industry would act with similar alacrity to develop a funding plan benefiting Detroit’s outmoded convention center and its most important client.

The Cobo project demands similar swift and immediate action.

More Details on the Next Prius

The next Toyota Prius, which is expected to debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2009, will achieve the impossible: It will be a bit larger, have more interior room, feature significantly more horsepower, and yet somehow achieve better fuel economy and lower emissions than the current model. That’s the word from Edmunds’ Auto Observer, which quoted an unnamed source from Toyota as saying we can also expect a range of different Prius models as it closes in on its bid to be making 1 million hybrids per year by the early 2010s. he next Prius will be engineered so that it drives on battery power alone more often than the current model does. It will also feature a larger 1797cc gas engine, which when combined with a next-generation electric motor, will output 160 hp, a stunning 50-hp gain over the current version if all this proves true. The source also said to expect an approximate increase in fuel economy of 10 percent, which should put the Prius near, or perhaps over, the magic 50-mpg mark in real-world conditions. Finally, the next Prius will be from three to four inches longer and about an inch wider without adding weight. I’m still hoping the final version looks something like the Concept X (shown), which has more visual “weight” and a more muscular stance than the current car.

Lexus: GS F model, 1-series fighter, hybrid galore

Lexus Australia’s chief executive, John Roca, gave up a number of product details to The Australian in an interview this past weekend, including the addition of an “F” variant of the GS sedan and possibly a full-size LS limo. Both models are aimed to attack luxury stalwarts Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz by offering a number of high-performance variants and also developing a new model that would slot in below the IS sedan to take on the BMW 1-series and the Audi A3. That model is still a few years away, but it will be an integral part of Lexus’ commitment to reach one million global sales in the next two to three years.

The other element includes offering hybrid versions of every vehicle it sells, plus the introduction of a hybrid-only model that will be unveiled in concept form this January at the Detroit Auto Show. Toyota’s luxury arm plans to release a redesigned five-seater RX next year, based off the LF-Xh concept that bowed in Tokyo, although there’s no word on the rumored seven-seat variant due out before the end of the decade.

Naturally, no conversation about Lexus would be complete without some mention of a two-door, coupe/convertible version of the IS, a model that’s been sorely lacking from the Lexus lineup, plus, the LF-A supercar, which should finally come to market in 2011, but may only be available in left-hand drive.

Land Rover to build the LRX

nascar,land rover,land rover lrx

We’ve big fans of the Land Rover LRX concept’s styling, which looked as good in black (unveiled in Geneva) as it did in the original white (unveiled in Detroit). So we’re suitably pleased by reports that Land Rover is preparing to build the vehicle, which could get the nameplate Freelander Sport in keeping with the nomenclature already set in place by the Range Rover Sport.

The production LRX would target the likes of the upcoming BMW X1 and Audi Q5 (and potentially the Porsche Roxster), while offering a range of eco-friendly engine options that help Land Rover reduce its overall environmental impact. Such powertrain possibilities could include a 2.2-liter diesel and 3.2-liter gasoline inline-six with the potential for start-stop technology and even a hybrid system. Although the Freelander Sport would be oriented towards on-road driving dynamics, we wouldn’t expect it to compromise the brand’s legendary off-road prowess as much as recent offerings from Jeep. Reports place the production LRX on the road as early as 2010, and we hope much of the show car’s dramatic styling would remain in place as the Land Rover rides the rocky road from concept to production.
