KTM concepts could point the way forward for Austrian brand

KTM, the Austrian purveyor of both two- and four-wheeled motoring lust, has made it clear that it’s a force to be reckoned with as it branches out into other enthusiast markets with such ridiculously awesome products as the X-Bow roadster and its RC8 superbike. Two things that remain a constant feature through all of the firm’s recent products are the orange, black and white color pallette and its angular design language. These features, along with KTM’s race-ready heritage, makes conceptual vehicle design for the company extremely interesting and proof comes in the form of six concepts designed by industrial design students at FH JOANNEUM University.

This is an instance where pictures speak louder than words, but we’ve copied the designer’s stated vision for each machine with captions in our gallery below. Each of these concepts was designed in conjunction with KTM, so they may offer an early glimpse into what’s coming from the company. In a word: awesome. We’ll take one of each.

EICMA 2008: KTM intoduces RC8 R, Supermoto T and R, 990 Adventure R

KTM is set to go racing next year with its RC8 R superbike, which is hot off the presses from the EICMA show in Milan. Featuring a V-Twin engine that displaces 1195cc’s (that’s almost the maximum size allowed for racing against liter-class fours), the liquid cooled engine pumps out 165 horsepower or 180 with the optional race exhaust. We’d expect a significant chunk of torque from the 75-degree twin cylinder as well, which the machine will rely on as it goes up against the stratospheric revvers from Japan.

2009 KTM 990 Supermoto R

As it waits for the upcoming EICMA show this November in Milan for its official release, the KTM 990 Supermoto R has gotten an early debut courtesy of somebody who got their hands on these images. We can clearly see a new color scheme featuring white bodywork with black and orange highlights along with an orange frame and black swingarm. Note the Y-Spoke wheels and Brembo Monoblock brakes, both of which will surely add to the hooligan-machine’s fun quotient. A forward-leaning riding position will help keep the front tire down, although it appears it may cut into the available fuel capacity, as well.

We don’t yet know if any changes have been made to the engine, but it probably doesn’t matter. The Austrian firm’s V-Twin makes plenty of power, especially for a naked bike with no wind protection. The Supermoto will most definitely rip on the corners and will be at its element at full lean angle, and that’s what really counts for a bike like this.
